International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Today is a time to reflect on how our communities can become fairer, safer places for all. What action can you take today to speak up against racism, and to make sure that everyone in Australia gets a fair go?

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) in 2022 focused on the theme “Voices for Action Against Racism”. Shedding light on the importance of tenacious, responsible and peaceful public participation and demonstrations. Its essential that we ensure representation is present in all sectors of decision-making, both for the prevention and eradication of racial discrimination.

Racially-motivated discrimination and violence can be seen all around. It is seen within the senseless tragedies that resulted in America’s Black Lives Matter movement.

In the beginning of 2020, there were the global rises in violence against Asian communities due to the circulation of bigoted misinformation, regarding COVID19.

In Australia, we see annual protests for our Nation’s ‘Australia Day’ (Referred to as Invasion/Survival Day) date to be changed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as the considerable amount of non-indigenous allies standing by them, continue to fight for the sovereignty of their Indigenous land and improved wellbeing of Indigenous communities.

Racial discrimination can be insidiously systematic or the outward persecution of certain minorities. We all have a roll to play in making sure that our communities are safe and equal places for everyone, disregarding the differences between yourself and them for a kinder future.
