Bowel Cancer Month

Every week in Australia, bowel cancer takes the lives of 103 people, accumulating to 5,354 deaths in a year. Bowel Cancer had the second highest fatality rate of any cancer in Australia, yet remains one of the most treatable types of cancer when discovered early.

Bowel Cancer Australia (BCA) have ensured a variety of events and programs that allow everyone to get involved with Bowel Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) 2023! The donations given to BCA and funds collected from BCAM events go towards the prevention, early detection, life-saving research, essential medical treatment and supportive care of people with bowel cancer, as well as their loved ones.

To be a Champion for Change in your community, please consider hosting or participating in a suggested event so you can show your support for those affected by bowel cancer.

A few of the ways to show your support of BCAM includes registering a local event for Bowel Cancer Month, fundraising to support the vital scientific research into bowel cancer, getting your loved ones to wear a bowel cancer awareness ribbon, hosting an apple themed brunch on Red Apple Day, creating a fundraiser webpage for BCA or sharing this cause on your social media.

Ultimately, fundamental changes happen through educating the people in your life about the importance of early detection. By completing a faecal occult blood test (FOBT) every two years, patients can detect any early signs of bowel cancer.

There are 300 Australians diagnosed with bowel cancer every week, meaning there are 15,610 new cases of bowel cancer diagnosed annually. By Australians improving their health practises regarding regular testing, the impacts and devastation of bowel cancer could be seriously minimised. A great program addressing this is Can We. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program that automatically sends free at home testing kits every 2 years to eligible recipients. Click on Can We’s webpage for more information.
