World Heart Day

Today is a time to reflect on the healthier choices we can all make to improve heart health. Increasing exercise, reducing salt, and lowering stress can all lead to longer, healthier lives.

The theme for World Heart Day 2022 is “Use Heart for Every Heart”.

“Use heart for humanity” to advocate for equitable access to necessary treatments. With 75% of cardiovascular disease deaths occurring in low to middle income countries, we have to address the fact that these already vulnerable individuals are taking it the hardest.

“Use heart for nature” to address the fact that 25% of all cardiovascular disease deaths are a result of air pollution. By being conscious of our impact on the environment and choosing to be considerate of the environment in our decisions, we can create a cleaner and healthier environment.

“Use heart for you” to ensure you are taking care of your own wellbeing and particularly reducing your stress levels. Psychological stress can double the risk of an individual having a heart attack and there are ways you can avoid this. By adopting healthy coping mechanisms, getting quality sleep, practising meditation and avoiding bad habits that feed stress, you can better protect your heart!
