National Diabetes Week
National Diabetes Week
Did you know that 1.7 million Australians suffer from Type 1 and 2 Diabetes? National Diabetes Week is an opportunity to reflect on what choices we could make to lead healthier, happier lives and prevent, or manage, diabetes.
Over 80% of people with diabetes report that they’ve felt blamed or shamed by others because of their condition. This statistic is heartbreaking and an important reminder of how harmful medical stereotypes are. National Diabetes Week has to be used to change how Australian’s talk about and understand those with diabetes and the condition itself. The stigma around diabetes can have a major impact on an individuals mental health, general wellbeing and ability to manage their condition.
National Diabetes Week is something that we should all get involved in! The wellbeing of those with diabetes must be protected, especially when the main causes of impact are dangerous social stigmas and stereotypes.
