International Literacy Day

Did you know that 40% of Australians have below-proficiency-level literacy abilities? Improved literacy reduces poverty and expands every individuals’ opportunities to participate in society. The Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) observes International Literacy Day every year on the 8th of September to bring Australia, and effectively the whole world, closer to eradicating illiteracy.

This date was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1967 to promote the essential qualities of literacy. Annually, organisations like ALEA and UNESCO, use this day to bring attention to international concerns regarding illiteracy and educate communities of what steps they can take to eradicate illiteracy.

Literacy has a major impact on an individuals human rights, feelings of dignity, and the opportunities that are provided to them in both work and personal settings. You can get involved in general community or ALEA-run events to work towards ensuring that everyone has equitable access to their right to read, write and learn.
