Can We | Cervical Screening Program

Can We works to change how Australians understand cancer and change the attitude from out of mind to top of sight. Ensuring that all Aussies are aware of their health risks, how cancer affects our communities and the regular medical testing relevant to them. The Australian Government estimated that there would be 942 new cervical cancer cases in 2022 and that the estimated death toll would reach 222.
Can We, a branch of ACON, works to change how Australians understand cancer and shift the attitude from ‘out of mind’ to ‘top of sight’! Ensuring that all Aussies are aware of their health risks, how cancer affects our communities and the regular medical testing relevant to them. Can We is a new organisation, dedicated to changing how Australia sees cancer and addressing the unique risk factors that face LQBTQ communities.
Cervical cancer is a heartbreaking condition that causes immense distress to diagnosed individuals and the people who care for them. Cervical Cancer in Australian leaves 1 in 162 women under the age of 85, with a serious risk of diagnosis. The scientific projections see this continuing unless effective community practises are established.
The most effective way for Australia to reduce and manage cervical cancer cases is through regular testing to encourage early diagnosis. About 80% of the individuals diagnosed cervical report they had never screened or were not up to date. The test used for screening cervical cancer is called the Cervical Screening Test, replacing the old Pap test in 2017, however other methods can be used for some people aged 40-49 and those with specific causation.
Rates of cervical cancer have a disproportionate impact in the LGBTQ community. Statistics show less testing and higher rates of drinking and smoking, which are considered major risk factors for developing cancer. It’s an important reminder to take care of the vulnerable individuals within our communities, and ensure the extra support they require is available.
To be eligible for their quinquennial screening reminders and the screenings themselves, you must meet these requirements:
- You are a woman or person with a cervix
- Aged 25-74
- In possession of a Medicare card
… and you’re especially encouraged to test if you engage in sexual activity.
If you fit the requirements above, your cervical cancer screening will be free, however this does not account for potential doctor or health providers’ fees.
