World Maternal Mental Health Day

In Australia, 1 in 5 new mums experience some form of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, also referred to as PMADs. This is a very real issue and does not discriminate against anyone, affecting people of all walks of life.

This affects the mothers first and foremost but also has difficult affects on the whole family unit. This is why 1 in 10 fathers also experience depression through this stressful period. Women’s health is an issue that has to be addressed. Both the women who experience PMADs and those who love them need social and medical change to ensure they are supported through these difficult periods.

It is crucial that we find better ways to support expecting families and particularly the wellbeing, mental health and resources for mothers to take care of themselves. With 20-25% of pregnancies resulting in miscarriages or stillbirths, we have to find better ways to care for our expecting mothers and mothers with angel babies.
