Safer Internet Day

“Connect. Reflect. Protect.” is the motto for Safer Internet Day 2023. This day is a global event, with 170 countries banded together to raise awareness on internet safety. It’s important that on this day we remember how important it is to be careful and respectful online.

The eSafety Commissioner calls on every Australian to connect safely and with purpose, to reflect before we act and to protect ourselves and others by taking action when we see misuse or abuse on internet platforms.

A study in 2020 found that 30% of LGBTQ+ Australians and 32% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experienced online hate speech – double the national average. You can find this study and others to learn more about the potential dangers of being online on their website.

Internet Safety is something that has to be taken incredibly seriously because its effects can be detrimental. We have to improve education around how to navigate the internet safely and what to do in upsetting or dangerous circumstances. To learn more about how you can be safer online and the importance of this cause, please visit their website for access to valuable resources.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger please call 000. If you need support please call the Kids Helpline at 1800 55 1800 or Lifeline at 13 11 14.
