Reclaim the Night (Perth)
NSW Rape Crisis Centre reports that 1 in 5 women in Australia will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. Reclaim the Night, also known as Take Back the Night, is an annual, international event which campaigns against all forms of violence against women. Traditionally, Reclaim the Night takes the form of a rally/march where the public hit the streets after dark and join together to take a stand against violence towards women, transgender people, and other people who are common targets of street harrassment and violence.
RTN was first held in Australia in 1978. It is a radical movement which challenges that idea that male violence against women is natural or unavoidable. It puts the focus back on the perpetrators and challenges them to behave better, rather than saying that the victim of the violence was ‘asking for it’. It challenges the whole of society to changes our expectations of how women should be treated. A popular RTN poster features the phrase ‘DON’T GET RAPED’ with letters crossed out so that it instead states, ‘DON’T RAPE’.
