National Sorry Day

On the 13th of February every year, Australians observe the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. The Stolen Generations suffered horrific traumas as a result of past government policies that reinforced the involuntary removal of children from their communities and families. Australia’s shameful history of persecuting Indigenous communities has made the Stolen Generations survivors some of the most vulnerable people in society.

We all remain accountable for supporting equitable Indigenous rights, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons and Australia’s wellbeing as a Country. The remaining Stolen Generations survivors keep governments and political figures attentive to the current disparities facing them by sharing the resilient stories of their unimaginable traumas, traumas that some of these survivors kept as secret for many years and even decades.

It’s essential that Australians continue to stand with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. For the healing journey of Indigenous Australia, it’s important we all listen to the impactful stories shared by Stolen Generations survivors.

You’re encouraged to watch the video above that shares the courageous story of Aunty Julie Black, a Barkindji woman who was stolen from her mother shortly after being born. Aunty Julie survived the heartbreaking torment caused by the Stolen Generations policies enforcement and her story is a much needed reminder of the many people still alive and in need, that continue to suffer from the effects these policies have left on Indigenous Australia and it’s community care.
