Indigenous Literacy Foundation

Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are so much lower than anywhere else in Australia.

The mission of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books – with a focus on early literacy and first language – but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories.

The work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to lift literacy levels would not be possible without the generosity of volunteers, who give their time and expertise. To see how you can volunteer visit their website for current opportunities.

Fundraising is also a wonderful way to help out. You may have heard of the The Great Book Swap which is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, and raise much-needed funds for remote communities. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for another, for a gold coin or note donation. Visit the website to register your school or workplace.
