Children’s Book Week

Schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australia’s children’s literature each year – you might see kid’s book character parades and talented librarians creating amazing displays.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has been running Children’s Book Week since 1945. Many Australian adults may even remember dressing up as their favourite book character for their school’s book week parade when they were younger! Over the years it has brought children and books together to promote literacy and the benefits of reading.
The theme for Children’s Book Week 2023 is ‘READ, GROW, INSPIRE’. By clicking on the video at the top of this screen, you can watch CBCA’s 2023 feature artist Matt Ottley discuss this theme and a painting he completed for Children’s Book Week.
Schools and libraries around Australia create colourful displays, activities, fun competition and tell stories that tie in with the theme to show communities and children the importance of reading. The teachers, librarians and other school staff that promote and facilitate this event in their local communities deserve a big thank you! Children’s Book Week does important work for youth literacy in Australia and it’s a cause that deserves widespread community support.
